Basic Information Python Regius, or more commonly called the Ball Python is a small species of snake found in Western and West-Central Africa. They are commonly known as Ball pythons simply because when startled they retract their heads and form a protective ball with their bodies. Ball Pythons are in the same family as Boas and other pythons. This means that they are constrictors, killing their prey by constricting the food item until suffocation occurs. In the wild Ball Pythons tend to live in the savannas of Africa. They are nocturnal, becoming most active at night, by nature. During the day they prefer to dwell in underground rodent dens or termite mounds. The average length of a newborn hatchling Ball python is between 16-18 inches, while adults can reach lengths of 36-48 inches. When kept in captivity in optimum conditions these snakes can live up to 50 years although more common ages reach 25-30 years.
Ball Pythons can make great pets if the owner has the basic knowledge required to provide the appropriate environment for the animal. These snakes can provide several different challenges at times and the owner should know how to face these challenges with ease and little stress. Several basic things that a Ball Python owner should know before purchasing is what type of cage setup a Ball Python requires, the temperature at which the snake thrives in, the type of food source that should be introduced to the snake, and you should know a qualified vet that is experienced with reptiles in your area. Once you receive your new Python you should leave it alone for a week to two weeks so that it can acclimate to its new environment, if handling is rushed the snake may become stressed and this can cause a whole world full of problems.
